PERSONALITY:
Nothing is really known about Lavi before he turned six years old. All we know is that during his sixth year of life, he threw everything away: his name, his past, and his heart in order to become the Bookman's Apprentice. Bookman belongs to the Bookman Clan, a group of people who travel the world and keep records of the secret history. In order to keep the history pure and objective, members of the Clan pledge to cast off their previous lives and emotional attachments. "Lavi" has no real name, no friends, no family. He travels with Bookman, his mentor, and with each record comes a new name, a new personality, and a new chunk of history to put to paper.

However, it is fairly difficult (if not impossible) for someone to have no feelings or opinions at all, and there are occasions where Lavi's true self peeks through. After watching conflict after conflict unfold in front of him, Lavi has become generally bitter about the human race. He doesn't understand why humans keep making the same mistakes again and again. He doesn't understand why there has to be war after war after war. He finds himself detached from people and their investments. Thus it is easier for him to stand off to the side and observe people and their actions objectively.

At the age of 16, Lavi picks up his current 49th alias, Lavi. His job is to observe the Black Order's side of the war alongside Bookman. The Black Order are the good guys of the series, the people who are fighting to stop the bad guys (the Millennium Earl and the Noah) from destroying the world. The most important fighters for the Black Order’s side are Exorcists, people chosen by special weapons called Innocence to fight the baddies. In order to integrate himself more naturally into the Black Order, a more friendly demeanor was chosen for the "Lavi" record.

As a result, Lavi is the cheer, humor, and occasional annoying sidekick of the team. He’s also very impulsive and sometimes just goes with his gut feeling. He is introduced as the competent goof. He thinks nothing of smashing entire buildings with his hammer, being chased by the local authorities, or setting just about anything on fire. He play flirts with the ladies even in dire situations. And while not always optimistic, his attitude or inappropriate quips alone can lighten the mood.

However, when things get tough, Lavi can show a surprising amount of logic and practicality. It is not hard for Lavi to distrust everyone and think of everyone as Akuma (undead souls disguised as humans that want to kill everyone). Someone you knew yesterday could be an Akuma today, and Lavi lives by that principle. He’s not hesitant to strike first and ask questions later.

Throughout the course of the series, Lavi’s main struggle is with himself. He knows that he needs to be objective and aloof in order to be a good Bookman's apprentice, but he just can’t keep his feelings down. Being young, a little on the undisciplined side, and surrounded by people willing to risk their lives for him time and time again has taken a toll on Lavi. As time progresses, he slowly begins to forge ties with the people around him. The line between smiling because he is Lavi and smiling because he wants to smile is a constant blur. He is having trouble telling whether his actions are fueled by real emotions, and it’s a ongoing struggle for him to control his feelings.

And the feeling that Lavi has the most problem controlling is his temper. When he is frustrated or can't understand something, he usually lashes out in anger. For example, when his teammate is being hard on herself when she wasn't able to protect someone, Lavi lashes out that they are in a war and to just accept that those things happen. He later lashes out at an enemy for hurting one of his comrades. Lavi's rash and sometime poor decisions show that despite all his training, he's still a kid that has a lot of growing up to do. It also shows that the battle between his duty and his heart has yet to be resolved.

ABILITIES:
Memory: Lavi has a very good memory. In fact, one might claim it's perfect. He was able to pick out one specific key out of a hundred similar keys after just one glance.

Innocence: Exorcists are defined by their compatibility with Innocence, a special weapon that grants its users powers to fight the bad guys. Lavi's Innocence is the Metal Hammer (which he has nicknamed "Big Hammer Little Hammer"). It has the following abilities:

† Size-changing: The hammer can grow or shrink in size on command, and Lavi feels no difference in the weapon's weight. This applies to increasing the size of the hammer for more effective smashing or lengthening the handle for travel.

† Seals: The hammer can unlock seals which Lavi uses to control various elements such as fire and air. Thus far Lavi has unlocked the following seals:

* FIRE SEAL (Configuration of Ash): Creates a fiery serpent to attack his enemies. This seal is by far his favorite.
* HEAVEN SEAL (Thundering Lightning Whirling in the Skies): Creates a lightning storm.
* WOOD SEAL (Roots Entwining Heaven and Earth): Can control the surrounding weather (such as clouds) or summon wind.
* COMBO SEAL (Strong Thunder of the Heavens): A more powerful attack that uses both the fire and lightning seals to create stronger metal-like serpents.
* WATER AND EARTH SEAL: Never shown up in canon, so will be avoiding those.

[ The feed starts out as voice as Lavi figures out how to work his communication device. Nothing like good ol' hands on experience. ]

Now if you'll just--- Don't you beep at me.

[ Wait, wait! There's nothing but red for a moment before a red-headed young man sporting an eyepatch finally comes into view. He gives the device a smile and a salute before turning it around to pan at the oh so lovely beach scene in front of him. ]

I love long walks on the beach as much as the next guy, but it's been one heckuva day already.

[ The camera whirls in dizzying speed back to Lavi again. He twirls the leather strap of his key around on his forefinger for whoever is on the other end of the network to see. ]

So where do I turn this in?

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Lavi stretched, stifling a yawn that was bubbling precariously in the back of his throat. Damn these long nights for messing with his sleep schedule. How could he take a proper nap when the sun wasn't even up half the time? Grumbling to himself, he straightened his slouch to something more rigid in the hopes that it would help keep him awake. No rest for the weary.

Lazily, Lavi continued to browse through the posts on the forum while keeping a game of solitaire up in a smaller window. Click. Start the next voice message. Click. Red eight on black nine. Click. Video start. Click. Ace of spades. Oh lovely. He hoped drawing the death card wasn't some ominous sign of what was going to show up this never-ending night.

Lavi didn't dwell on this too long before something in the video catches his eye. Or rather, the way the two people bantering back and forth are interacting is very interesting indeed. The original poster's eyes kept constantly flicking to the left. Hmmmm. Is he lying? Or is he just worried about something? Maybe there is something off screen? Humming quietly to himself, Lavi filed every nuance and motion away to be looked back on later. It might be useful; it might not be. Either way, the information was stored somewhere in his brain to be brought up at a later time.

Lavi was about to click on the next post when he heard a noise outside the room. There were people out and about and nearby, chattering about something. Shutting the cover of his laptop down tight, Lavi quickly rose to his feet. In the blink of an eye, all the signs of a person wanting to take a nap are replaced with his trademark goofy grin.

Time to see what the neighbors were up to in person.

KERNOS, huh? Not a name I'm familiar with, and that's saying a lot. But then again I don't remember signing up for anything either. Hope this isn't another Science Division prototype on the blink...

Anyway--[Waving at the camera now] Hi! Name's Lavi, resident Exorcist and Bookman in training. You can call me Junior if that's easier. Pleasure to meetcha all through this sweet little piece of technology. Even more of a pleasure to meet you in person, especially if I could get a volunteer from the audience to stop by and give a guy directions.

[Lavi furrows his brows for a moment, pausing and debating on whether to cut the video off there. He certainly could, but there is just one last thing he has to make sure of.]

Oh yeah. One more thing.

[Lavi pinches himself hard, yelping and almost dropping his device.] Oh good. This isn't another Dream.
